2026 Hailed as the Age of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projectsโ€”Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hopsโ€”in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks especially powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begunโ€”and the chance for moreโ€”the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games find successโ€”and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeedโ€”we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
