Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also comprised experts in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
