Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
