Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
